When you download a Red Gate Software product, you have a 14 day trial period in which you can evaluate the product. When your trial period expires, you are invited to purchase the product. You are then sent a serial number (on your invoice), which you use to activate the product. You can, of course, purchase and activate the product prior to the expiry of the trial period, if preferred.

You can activate your product by Internet. The Red Gate activation server is contacted and returns an activation response and an encrypted key to unlock the software.

Alternatively, if you do not have an Internet connection, you can activate by e-mail. You may also need to activate by e-mail if your network is protected by a firewall or uses a proxy server that interrupts contact between your product and the activation Web service.

The activation server uses hardware attributes from your computer. Therefore, if you need to re-install the product on the same computer, for example following installation of a new operating system, you can re-activate the product using the same serial number. If you need to change the computer on which the product is installed and your current serial number does not work, contact the Red Gate support team at support@red-gate.com.

The hardware attributes that are sent to the activation server do not contain any details that might pose a security risk. However, if you are concerned about security and would like to see the information that is transferred, use e-mail activation; the e-mails show exactly what information is sent to the activation server, and received back from the server.

Activating by Internet

  1. On the trial dialog box, click Enter License Key, or on the SQL Prompt menu, click Enter License Key and on the license activation dialog box, click Enter License Key.
  2. Enter your serial number and click Next.

Your serial number is printed on your invoice.

  3. Click I would like to activate the product over the Internet and click Next.

Your request for activation is sent to Red Gate Software using the Internet. When your activation has been confirmed, the Successful activation page is displayed.

Note that you should receive the activation response within a few minutes of sending your request. If you do not, and you are sure that your Internet connection is valid, try again using e-mail activation.

  4. Click Finish.

You can now continue to use your product.

Activating by E-mail

  1. On the trial dialog box, click Enter License Key, or on the SQL Prompt menu, click Enter License Key and on the license activation dialog box, click Enter License Key.
  2. Enter your serial number and click Next.

Your serial number is printed on your invoice.

  3. Click I would like to activate the product by e-mail and click Next.

  4. Copy the text provided in the box, paste the text in a plain text e-mail, and send it to activation@red-gate.com

If you use a format other than plain text for your e-mail, activation may fail.

Do not send multiple requests for activation in the same e-mail, as activation may fail.

  5. Click Next.

You should receive an e-mail from the Red Gate activation server within a few minutes.

  6. When you receive the e-mail from Red Gate Software, open the attached text file and copy the text into the empty text box.

  7. Click Next.

When your activation has been confirmed, the Successful activation page is displayed.

  8. Click Finish.

You can now continue to use your product.
