SQL Dependency Tracker 2.4

Working With Projects

See Also

Whenever you use SQL Dependency Tracker to track dependencies, you set up a current project. A project contains the information required to connect to a database, and details such as which objects are included in the dependency diagram and the layout used.

When you start SQL Dependency Tracker, an empty project is opened for you. You can add objects to the empty project to create a new dependency diagram. You can then save the project to a file for future reference.

Alternatively, you can open an existing project to view or edit it.

For each project, you can set project options that define how SQL Dependency Tracker behaves when the project is open.

Creating a new project

To create a new project:

  1. On the File menu, click New.

If you have unsaved changes in the current project, you are prompted to save it.

SQL Dependency Tracker displays an empty project.

  2. Add objects to the project as required.
  3. Customize the diagram as required.
  4. Save the project.

Opening an existing project

  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. In the Open dialog box, browse to the project file and click Open.

SQL Dependency Tracker project files have the extension .sdvproj

If you have unsaved changes in the current project, you are prompted to save it.

Alternatively, you can double-click the SQL Dependency Tracker project file (.sdvproj) in Microsoft® Windows® Explorer to open it.

To open a recently-used project, on the File menu click Recent Projects, and then click the name of the file.

Saving projects

When you have set up your project, you can save it for future reference. You can also save an existing project to a new name.

  1. On the File menu, click Save project as.
  2. In the Save As dialog box, enter a name for the project and click Save.

Projects are saved with the extension .sdvproj. The name of the project is shown in the title bar.

When you have saved the project, it becomes independent of the databases from which you created it. You can copy the project file, even from one computer to another, and it can be opened in SQL Dependency Tracker without reference to the original databases or SQL Server instances. You will need to connect to the original SQL Server only if you want to add further objects to the diagram or update the diagram from the databases.

If you make changes to the current project, to save it:

Setting project options

You can set the project options when you add objects to a project or after you have opened a project.

To display the project options after you have opened a project:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Project tab of the Options dialog box, select or clear the check boxes as required:
    • Save passwords with project

Select this check box if you want to save SQL Server passwords with the project so that you do not have to enter them repeatedly. The saved passwords are encrypted in the project file.

    • Close message boxes when operations are complete

When an operation takes a long time, SQL Dependency Tracker displays a message box to inform you of the progress of the operation. Select this check box if you want the message box to close automatically when the operation has completed.

  3. Click OK to save your settings.

To reset your project options and diagram options to the default settings, click Reset.
